A homebrew beer tracking app for Android
If you brew beer at home, BrewNote is a free Android app for logging each batch: your recipe and process notes, original and final gravity, fermentation temperature, dry-hop and packaging dates, and tasting notes. It works offline and needs no account.
Whether you brew all-grain, extract, or brew-in-a-bag, the brew day is only the start. What happens in the fermenter decides how the beer turns out, and a batch log is how you repeat a good one and fix a bad one.
What to log for each beer batch
- Recipe: grains or extract, hops, yeast, water, and batch size.
- Process notes such as mash temperature, boil length, and hop additions.
- Original gravity, and dated readings through fermentation.
- Fermentation temperature.
- Dry-hop, cold-crash, and packaging dates.
- Final gravity, ABV, and tasting notes.
Typical numbers for homebrewed beer
| Beer | Typical OG | Typical FG | Typical ABV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session beer | 1.030–1.040 | 1.006–1.010 | 3–4% |
| Standard ale or lager | 1.045–1.060 | 1.008–1.014 | 4.5–6% |
| Strong beer | 1.075–1.100 | 1.012–1.025 | 8–11% |
Ranges are approximate and vary by style. The BJCP style guidelines give targets for specific styles.
How BrewNote handles beer
Start a batch as a beer, from scratch or from a saved recipe. Import a recipe from a website link or a photo of a printed recipe, and check off recipe steps on brew day.
Log hydrometer or refractometer readings. BrewNote charts gravity once you have a couple, and the calculator corrects refractometer readings taken after fermentation starts.
Set reminders for dry hopping, cold crashing, or packaging. Reminders can notify you and go on your calendar.
ABV for beer uses the standard (OG − FG) × 131.25 formula. Rate each batch and compare batches of the same recipe.
What BrewNote doesn’t do
- BrewNote is a batch log, not a recipe designer. It doesn’t calculate IBU, color (SRM), mash water volumes, or efficiency. If you need those, use a dedicated recipe designer alongside it.
- BrewNote is Android only for now. There is no iPhone version.
- It doesn’t connect to digital hydrometers or Bluetooth sensors. You type in readings yourself.
- There’s no cloud sync between devices. You move data with a zip backup instead.

Frequently asked questions
What’s a simple app for logging homebrew beer batches?
BrewNote is a free Android app for this. Log recipes, gravity readings, fermentation temperature, and tasting notes, set dry-hop and packaging reminders, and calculate ABV. It works offline with no account.
Does BrewNote calculate IBU or SRM?
No. BrewNote focuses on logging batches and fermentation rather than recipe design, so it doesn’t calculate bitterness, color, or efficiency.
Can I import beer recipes into BrewNote?
Yes. Share a recipe link from a website, or take a photo of a printed recipe, and BrewNote fills in a recipe for you. Parsing runs on your phone.
